Keep The Momentum

“In the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins- not through strength but by perseverance”. H. Jackson Brown

February is almost over and being the shortest month of the year, it can sometimes feel as though it’s the most unproductive. All the buzz about the “New Year” has subsided and there is a general complacency in the air with a tendency to revert to ‘default settings’- business as usual. Well- say no to complacency and go against the tide. I want to encourage you to make this February count! Keep the momentum going and don’t take your foot off the pedal.

3 tips to help you beat complacency:

  1. Get an accountability partner to help you keep track of your goals and dreams. This could be a mentor, colleague, friend or close relation. Whoever it is, make sure they have your best interests at heart, and are not afraid to push you or tell you the truth
  2.  Write down all the possible (reasonable) rewards that you could give yourself for completing your first quarter goals on time- put them in a jar, and pick one at random. That way, you have a fun treat to look forward to, and it will remove the burden of the task. Examples of this could be: going to the movies; meal at your favourite restaurant, weekend away, spa day, or anything else within your means.
  3. Have a strong reason WHY you want to accomplish that particular task and WHY it is important for it to happen now, as opposed to later. This acts as an anchor and pull factor to keep you in gear. Write it down and put it on your fridge or mirror, or save it digitally as a screen saver on your digital device. That way, it is in your face as a constant reminder of your focus and priorities. Take this goal for instance: To adopt a healthier lifestyle by diet, exercise and weight control– Your WHY or pull factor should be that you want to live long and healthy enough to be able to play with your great grand children. That would be a much stronger pull factor than just to ‘look good’. There will be days when you don’t feel like exercising or dieting- your strong WHY factor will help you stay in lane.

So whatever you have decided to accomplish this year, this month, this week, make an effort towards it now- rise and shine. Consistent action will take you there. Even if it’s just a small step; make that phone call; fill in that application; go to that networking event; show up; do that budget; make that move. You have to persevere – H. Jackson Brown puts it this way: “In the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins- not through strength but by perseverance”. So go for it regardless of how you feel or if everyone else around you is complacent- You just do it! Keep the momentum going.
